I'm often asked about what is important to build out a business as somebody who leverages their expertise.
This year, I'm partnering with Sylvie Blair, my publisher, to help people build their businesses based on their area of expertise. There are four factors to consider.
The first references a book. Writing a book requires regular consistent effort; once you have established this rhythm of writing, you'll be pleasantly surprised by how quickly the words amount.
When I wrote my first book, I was pleased to finish the draft and hand it over to the editor, but I soon realised that was just the first step.
Here are my thoughts on turning your expertise into a business.
Awareness – of your book
Your book can build awareness and engagement with your communities. A bestseller campaign will establish greater credibility and make new connections. It will increase your authority. You need to understand how Amazon works, the categories your book could be listed in and how to create a waitlist of readers.
Amplification – blogging and socials
Regular blogging and planned social media activity will remind people of your expertise through the sharing of insights. It's not one post or blog that will lead to awareness; it is a coordinated combination. Don’t be concerned by the volume of likes and comments; it is the regular activity that enabled me to be recalled by executives when they have a challenge.
Outreach – problem solving
Awareness, Amplification, and Outreach will lead to opportunities to solve problems. Listening and questioning without positioning solutions will lead to becoming a confidant. Your services can then be tailored.
Earnings – aim for diverse clients
Prospect and client diversity is the key to sustainable business. It is maintained through consistent effort across the earlier pillars. This consistent combination will lead to prospects and clients.
