Strategy Development - Use My Triangle

Over the past few months, I’ve spoken with numerous CIOs about strategy.

Many have turned to Big Four firms or boutique consultants, only to find the advice unhelpful or misaligned.

That’s why I want to revisit a concept I developed for my first book, the “Strategy Triangle,” which was also included in my latest book.

This framework, developed after working with executives across Europe post-2008, helps leaders create actionable and meaningful strategies by focusing on three essential components.

STRATEGY TRIANGLE

1. Foundation

   - Do the basics right consistently.

   - Address key operational challenges to build a stable base.

2. Simplification

   - Identify areas to streamline and remove unnecessary complexity.

   - Simplification frees up resources and sharpens focus.

3. Innovation

   - Look to the horizon—what’s next for your business?

   - Define your investments, strategic bets, and opportunities to differentiate.

ABOVE & BELOW THE ICEBERG

An effective digital and technology strategy involves managing visible and less visible elements.

Below the iceberg

  - These are technical or less apparent components of the strategy.

  - Don’t overwhelm a non-technical audience with excessive detail.

  - Instead, highlight the risks of inaction and manage funding within your budget.

Above the iceberg

  - Focus on resource constraints and business demands that are evident to stakeholders.

  - Use this to build a clear, compelling business case.

Structure your strategy with achievable milestones:

  • 6 months - What can you deliver in the short term to build momentum?

  • 12 months - Where do you want to be in a year?

  • Beyond 12 months - What are your long-term goals and investments?

Creating a clear, actionable strategy can be transformational for your organisation. Whether it’s about simplifying processes, investing in innovation, or aligning teams, thoughtful planning makes all the difference.
