Managing Evaporating Time

Between now and the end of the year, there will be many priorities.

As we approach the end of the year, workloads typically intensify.

Here are some principles to help you focus (time management), make better decisions, and empower your teams.

1. Relationships

Building and maintaining key relationships across various teams is critical. Map out these relationships to identify where your time and energy are most needed. This proactive approach helps in knowing which connections require your focus, ensuring smoother collaboration and support when challenges arise.

2. Randomisation

Being stretched too thin across many tasks can compromise quality. Instead of scattering efforts, leaders should assess where they can make the most impactful contributions and delegate wherever possible. Reducing task randomisation will allow you to perform at a higher level and focus on responsibilities where you add the most value.

3. Responsibilities

Leaders must consider which responsibilities can be shared or handed over. Empowering others to step up not only helps distribute the load but also builds the skills of team members.

4. Rituals

Regular team meetings, one-to-one check-ins, and company-wide updates are essential rituals that keep everyone aligned. Don’t deprioritise these engagements; they’re an opportunity to keep the team informed and inspired. Additionally, consider inviting other team members to represent your area in broader discussions.

5. Recognition

Recognising contributions keeps morale high and encourages continuous effort. Whether it’s acknowledging someone’s performance or their positive impact on team culture, make sure recognition is timely and meaningful. This motivates individuals and shows them that their efforts are noticed and valued.

6. Reoccurrences

Identify recurring issues or patterns that impede progress. These could be repeated project challenges, process inefficiencies, or cultural misalignments. By addressing the root causes of these reoccurrences, leaders can drive sustainable improvement and create a more effective working environment.

Each of these "Six Rs" serves as a focal point for effectively navigating busy times, helping you maintain clarity, build team capacity, and ultimately achieve better results for your organisation.
